The Evanesco Duo Premiere Concert

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

The Old Bluecoat School Recital

12th June 2022, 15:30 – 16:30

The Old Bluecoat School, Thatcham RG18 4JS, UK

The Old Bluecoat School recital was a very special day for us. It marked the beginning of our journey as the Evanesco Duo. We spent weeks researching and deciding the best repertoire for our first appearance, aiming for a programme that would have a little something for everyone and show off the beauty that a flute and bassoon can create!

We were very lucky to have had the opportunity to welcome guest pianist Sue Garcia-Sierra on this day with us. She made the day even more special for us with her inspiring talent and ease with which she adapted to our sounds.

We were quite nervous as we were not sure if anyone would come to our first concert but were thrilled to have seen such a big and supportive audience who said they would be eager to come and see us again and follow our journey.

We were also very lucky to have had a wonderful review by Thomas Gibbs:

Duo breathe life into Sunday afternoon No weekend is quite complete without a flute/bassoon duo recital. I didn’t know this until Sunday (12th) when the Evanesco Duo made their debut in the Old Bluecoat School, Thatcham. Comprising flautist Sophie Hallam and bassoonist Karol Niklas, the ensemble lit up the former chapel with an hour of songful drama. So, a woodwind duo offering repertoire drawn from the heart of the operatic canon. No doubt, the vibe is quite niche - but niches are there to be found, and these two young musicians remind us that exploring new spaces and scenarios is exciting! The pairing proved far greater than the sum of its parts; the vivid colours of Sophie’s sound complementing the richness of Karol’s in a sonic alchemy that seemed to build its own acoustic, gleefully ignoring the constraints of the walls and inviting the sun in. Sue Garcia-Sierra made a fabulous one-woman pit orchestra, supporting Evanesco’s melodic acrobatics from the piano. Everyone involved excelled. Any difficulties posed by the music were deftly concealed with technical skill and kindhearted showmanship, even managing to distract from the assortment of cake on hand.
